A New Feel

Blue Forty was approached by surfboard shaping guru Travis Yamada of Cubicle Surf to assist in the design and production of a new type of surfboard fin. Inspired by 1980’s longboard “hatchet” fins, Twangers seek to be the opposite of that: a high performance, hard charging shortboard fin. Selecting an ultra strong G10 composite, allowed for a thin foil profile with minimal drag.

The hatchet-like fin profile itself was performance driven. We pulled as much surface area out of the waist of the fine, placing it along the trailing edge. This material shift allows the surfer to load up kinetic energy into the fin in a hard turn, which is released on the exit. The thick base provides consistent drive down the line and improves the predictability of the fin release.
